As a result of the Poomacha Fire, which began on October 23 on the La Jolla Indian Reservation over 9,000 acres of the reservation land was burned, with extensive loss of oak and wildlife. 55 of our homes were destroyed and approximately 30 homes suffered smoke damage. Over 180 tribal members were left homeless. The electricity and telephone service has been restored on most parts of the reservation. The water system experienced numerous breakages and needs extensive repairs.
Under the best of circumstances, the rebuilding of the community will take years, perhaps decades.
We are a non-gaming tribe and our financial position is insufficient to handle such a catastrophic event. Our tribe is in dire need of funds for our recovery process. Any assistance you can provide will be sincerely appreciated.
